Signing up for Medicare can be done in a few steps. Here’s a simple guide to help you navigate the process:
1. Determine Your Eligibility
Most people are eligible for Medicare when they turn 65. You can also qualify earlier if you have certain disabilities or conditions like End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
2. Understand the Enrollment Periods
There are specific times when you can sign up for Medicare:
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): This is a 7-month period that starts 3 months before your 65th birthday month, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after.
General Enrollment Period (GEP): If you miss your IEP, you can sign up between January 1 and March 31 each year, but you might face late enrollment penalties.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP): If you’re still working and have employer coverage, you can enroll later without penalties, typically within 8 months of losing that coverage.
3. Sign Up for Medicare A and/or B
Online: Visit the Social Security website (ssa.gov) and follow the instructions to apply online.
By Phone: Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).
In Person: Visit your local Social Security office. You can find the nearest office using the Social Security Office Locator on their website.
By Mail: Fill out a paper application and mail it to the Social Security Administration.
Call Lisa. 208-544-5011: I will personally help you sign up online and navigate the confusing system.
4. Decide on Additional Coverage
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B): This covers hospital and medical insurance. Most people get Part A premium-free if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.
Medicare Advantage (Part C): These plans are offered by private companies and include Part A, Part B, and often Part D (prescription drug coverage).
Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D): If you stick with Original Medicare, you might want to add Part D for prescription drug coverage.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap): These policies help cover some of the costs not covered by Original Medicare, like co-payments and deductibles.
5. Gather Necessary Information
You’ll need some personal information to complete your application, including:
Your Social Security number
Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful residency
Your current health insurance information
Employment information if you’re still working
6. Apply for Medicare
Once you’ve gathered all necessary information and documents, you can proceed with the application. If you’re signing up for a Medicare Advantage, Part D, or Medigap plan, call me to assist you. This part can be really tricky. Lisa 208-544-5011.
